Isn’t that the way it goes? After a little light chit chat, you spend the first five minutes explaining what the job is all about?

1: Isn’t that a huge waste of time?

2: Isn’t that a huge waste of money? Let’s say you have to interview three people and you have three staffers in the interview. Five minutes per explanation times three interviews times three staff members is 45 minutes. That doesn’t sound like much, but let’s pretend that the average salary and overhead for your staff is $100. You just spent $75 explaining a job. So, $75 times the number of openings you are going to fill this year… I’ll let you do the math.

3: If the job description doesn’t explain what the job is all about, what exactly did these people apply for?

So the next time you think your job descriptions are doing their job, stick your head into the first few minutes of any interview and see what’s really going on.
