Look, the lawyers will tell you that there are things you have to put in the job description, like your EOE statement, the basic requirements of an applicant, etc.

But they never said that you had to stop there. They never said, “Don’t tell a story about what this job does all day,” or “Don’t try to explain the reasons why people choose to work at this job over others.” They never said that.

So instead of looking at your job description as a somehow-even-more-boring-W2 form, look at it as a vessel vetted by lawyers into which you can add more details and stories, motivating and compelling details that get people actually excited to apply. Throw a picture in there! Or some quotes from other people doing the job or the people who rely on that job to get their’s done.

The lawyers won’t mind. Really.
